Agenda

9:30 AM – 9:35 AM Welcome and Introduction – Alfredo Abate, COUG

9:35 AM – 10:15 AM Everything You Know Is Wrong: DBA Intuition, Meet Hard-Core Metrics, Jim Czuprynski, Advanced Technical Consultant – Oracle Solutions, ViON Corporation

Handling application performance degradation – especially when an RDBMS as complex as Oracle Database 12cR2 underlies the application – can be a complex, time-consuming, frustrating task. Via actual use cases, stories of painful discoveries, and of course some hard-core metrics, this session will take a look at some of the simplest mistakes even an Oracle DBA can make when probing application performance issues and how to overcome one’s own blind spots when searching for the true root causes of that degradation.

10:15 AM – 10:25 AM Break
10:25 AM – 12:30 PM Architecture Review by AWR: How the Real World Performance Group Reads an AWR, Graham Wood, Architect Oracle Corp

Oracle’s Real World Performance Group is dedicated to ensuring that customers get the most out of their Oracle databases. Graham Wood will show you how to do just that by reviewing some of your real-world Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) reports from the perspective of an experienced performance tuning expert. So if you’ve ever struggled with navigating the voluminous performance metrics and valuable tuning information within your database’s AWRs, feel free to submit one of the more challenging ones in advance to COUG. You can e-mail them directly to COUG and as long as they are received by Monday, February 26th, they’ll be included in the pool of AWRs that Graham will dissect at his session. Don’t miss your organization’s chance to benefit from this unique opportunity!

12:30 PM – 1:15 PM Lunch and Networking Break
1:15 PM – 2:00 PM Streaming Oracle to Apache Kafka: Stories from the Message Bus StopBjörn Rost, Principal Consultant, Pythian

Apache Kafka is a massively scalable message queue that is being used at more and more places connecting more and more data sources. This presentation will introduce Kafka from the perspective of a mere mortal Oracle DBA and share the experience of (and challenges with) getting events from the database to Kafka and possibly even backusing different solutions and connectors including poor-man’s CDC using flashback query and replication tools like Dbvisit and Oracle Golden Gate.

2:00 PM – 2:10 PM Break
2:10 PM – 3:00 PM Oracle 18c Best New Features, Rich Niemiec, Chief Innovation Officer, Viscosity Architect Oracle Corp

This presentation will look at which 18c new features that should be investigated for use (such as In-Memory External Tables, Merge Partition Online, Advances in the Approximate Query, and Password-less Schema Creation – & oithers), .  Most of the features that will be covered will be related to the DBA, but there will also be a few outside that realm that focus on the developer.  There will be simple examples, where possible, to show the basic functionality of the new features.  Some features are too new to show example, but only explain.  We will also look at the autonomous database and Oracle’s focus on the future of security.
